Recently when using the new Yahoo Mail I noticed a free credit report service. I had read somewhere that every US citizen is entitled to a free credit report from the 3 bureaus each year and decided to check where my credit rating was. FreeCreditReport.com advertised a free service and offered to give me a free credit report but I didn't read the fine print properly that promptly entered me into a paid monthly subscription with credit report updates each month. After I saw the charges on my credit card I decided to call the company for a cancelation and a refund. The company refused the refund the amount. I entered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in the US and they promptly took up the case with the company. And I got my refund! I have heard about the BBB in the many years I lived in the US but this was my first experience with it. And it was positive.
Now I am in Bangalore and I wondered if we have a similar forum here in India to report business complaints. Ensuring the consumer is protected and fair business practices are conducted is key as the economy here expands. I noticed that there is a BBB registered in Kolkata but I'm unaware of any such facility here in India. Does anyone know? If there isn't one, how can we go forward and create such an organization?

I was in the US for a few years, so I know how most of the businesses use the credit card responsibly, but over here it is pathatic, I don't think people and the merchant bank and consumer banks give importance to the rules. People at the bank and the bank employees handling the disputes are not matured enough to understand the rules and some time they are not aware of the rules. Recently I became a victim of a club membership fraud. The sales guy promised that the club is promoting residential plots for the members, but after the credit card swipe, the bill was for a membership fee and the letter stated that I have been elevated to the next level of membership for a fee of 2 Lakhs. The company disconnected the act of sales people and told me that I should have read all the conditions. This is the way the companies are making money, when I searched the web many people like me were the victim of the Country Club (CCIL) based in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. I called the banks to file a dispute, it took a lot of effort to convince the bank to take the dispute form accepted. I hope ther will be a good result. Some guys had filed a case in the consumer court in Bangalore and recovered the money. Hope your BBB gets created in future in India too, there is one BBB in Kolkata, but I am not sure whether they are anything to do with the Credit card consumers.
